“We brought ten Figmates together to share their tips and tricks with you. We dove into features, covered getting started in Figma, plugins, and speed tips. You’ll hear from engineers, designers, designer advocates, product managers, and researchers.”
Chris Baty is the Principal UX Writer at Figma and was previously the head of UX writing at Dropbox. He’s also the founder of NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month). In this podcast, he talks about joining Figma, the work he’s doing there to make Figma an exceptional tool for UX writers and content designers, and what it’s like working as a team of one.
During an audit of marketing pages, the team at Figma realized they weren’t following their own advice. Over the course of a month, their small team created and organized a robust, adaptable style guide and component library that now lives in their CMS. I loved that part: “…every color has its own branded name, inspired by California, where Figma is based. An earthy green is avocado toast, and an ember yellow is sunset.”
What a gem! “This file contains the Figma design language and system. It includes the styles, components, and variants Figma’s design team uses everyday to design Figma itself, as well as some instructions and best practices.”
Figma profile by Index Ventures, with insights from Sho Kuwamoto and Dylan Field.
“At Figma, we believe in continuously investing in product quality and developer productivity by looking at recurring types of bugs and addressing them in a systematic way. A few months ago, our engineering team completed a large effort that achieves both: turning on the strictNullChecks
compiler flag for our front-end TypeScript codebase.”
Figma has hired Ken Norton as director of product. Ken spent more than fourteen years at Google, where he led product initiatives for Google Docs, Google Calendar, Google Mobile Maps, and GV. After using Figma for nine months, he said he approached the company about joining.
You may remember Craig Mod from his keynote on Config 2020. In this podcast, he talks about finances, starting investing at an early age, saving to buy future freedom, and how this approach led him to invest in Figma during the early days.
