I mentioned that technique in the last issue, and now the plugin is available in the Community. Great tool by Anvesh Dunna for creating interesting embossed line patterns from vector layers.
It all started with Rahul Chakraborty’s question about a particular illustration technique used by Sketch in their blog. Two days later, Isaac Miller built the Extrusion Effect web app to generate cool extruded illustrations, and Anvesh Dunna turned this technique into a Figma plugin — hopefully, it will be available in the Community later this week. That’s why I love the design community!
Turned this into a plugin with a bunch of props. I love doing procedural stuff, so gave this a try. Learned a lot about vector networks. #figma #figmaplugin https://t.co/Z7ffG23eu9 pic.twitter.com/aAhCxL8oM5

Fons Mans explains how to create an image fade effect in Figma.
Quite some designers asked me how to create this image fade effect in @figma, so I made a quick tutorial on it!

Dan Hollick explains the science behind making realistic shadows and recommends the Beautiful Shadows plugin that takes care of this for you.
What makes a shadow look realistic?
— Dan Hollick 🇿🇦 (@DanHollick) August 9, 2023
Well, there are essentially two parts to a shadow: the fully occluded part (Umbra), and the partially occluded part (Penumbra).
Ideally, you need at least two layers of drop shadow to mimic these. pic.twitter.com/fJ7NgiMJKg
A new plugin for manipulating design elements to achieve interesting visual effects. “The plugin provides a wide range of features, including effortless horizontal and vertical movement, adjustments to size in both dimensions, rotation, duplication, and more.” See the demo video to come up with ideas for specific use cases.
Fons Mans is back with a new tutorial on how to create a glowing glass effect in Figma.

What, an old-school plugin without AI? 🤯 “Dithercore creates cool dithered images reminiscent of ’80s and ’90s computer graphics. It brings back the primitive technology of early PCs by utilizing pixel patterns and color schemes from that era.“
A pack from Double Glitch with a collection of pre-made text effects that you can apply to your designs with just a few clicks. Reminds me of the good ol’ days of downloadable Photoshop actions. While the pack is commercial, I suggest checking out a free demo in the Community and watching a screencast.
Vijay wrote a step-by-step guide on making a button with a cool multi-color glowing effect.
I always wanted to mask the gradient to create a button like this in @figma. Finally, I found a solution. Here, Sharing the behind-the-scenes and video tutorials to create this cool button.😍 pic.twitter.com/ldzOSVAodb

Vijay is experimenting with inner shadows in Figma. Despite a limit of only 8 shadows, it’s usually enough to create a 3D effect on any shape.

I found that if you use drop shadow or inner shadow on any layer, the limit is 8. In spite of this, it is enough to make any shape like 3D. One secret shared below ☺️. pic.twitter.com/da9sz9fLv0
Vijay Verma shares a few techniques for adding simple halftone effects in Figma. See also his experiments with Rogie’s upcoming NT plugin and how he achieved a frosted glass effect.
Yes, this is @figma. Simple halftone effects can be easily added to your photos and illustrations to give them a retro look.

Another experimenting with @rogie NT plugin. Sharing techniques here 🧶 pic.twitter.com/X43m4oXSWg
The plugin allows you to create beautiful shadows by simply dragging a “light source,” which casts a shadow from selected elements. The shadow effect is achieved by layering and easing multiple drop-shadows to create a skeuomorphic shadow umbra and penumbra.
Figma just rolled out a feature that allows you to turn off showing a shadow behind transparent areas. I'm ridiculously stoked about this because of what it means for turning designs into code.

My friend Nether @nether8904 told me that Figma effect styles' icon will indicate the offset direction. That's a really cool detail! @figmadesign pic.twitter.com/VKrTvxD3iA

Now you can adjust shadow spread in Figma on some kinds of objects to create better depth, glows, and borders. It’s fully compatible with the CSS property box-shadow
